It should be pretty obvious once you finish the game.

It’s funny how different our experiences were: I found the ghost miner bit super frustrating despite being more of a stealth gamer. Got caught a good fifteen times. Loved the astronaut bit as this was my first successful puzzle and opened my perception of what was really going on more than any other puzzle in the game.

I agree that Ethan Carter won’t stand the test of time. It was one of my favorites of last year and I already see it slipping out of my grasp in terms of affection. I also agree that two modes would have greatly improved the experience for some. My opinion waned as I got others to play it. They had terrible experiences with it thanks to their inability to catch the puzzles or feel enchanted by the world. I loved my time with it, but for something to truly last it needs to transfer well to my non-critic game friends.

Thanks for the thoughtful write up.

I’ve heard it used both ways.

I wouldn’t have even known there *was* jump scares if I hadn’t heard about it afterwards. I wouldn’t have guessed they existed. Ethan Carter seemed above such cheap tricks. Otherwise, a pretty good little mystery and a nice conclusion that feels climatic.

Good atmosphere, good mystery, and overall a rather interesting experience.
