M+L is the game I didn’t realize I was waiting for the entire time I knew XBLIG. I do have to see how the combat changed, because I really liked it in the first version too.

There’s no block/dodge/counter bullshit. Hit and run type stuff. And again, I think maybe I was hug up on how bad the combat was and didn’t appreciate how good the level design was.

Congrats to Morgopoplis! I didn’t mind the combat in the original build and I still don’t understand criticism such as “the game grinding to a screeching halt every time you encounter an enemy” when you could actually run past every enemy in the game except for bosses. And the bosses are my only real gripe with the game as the sudden spike in difficulty would more often than not stop my progress. The first time around, I completely lacked the skill and patience to beat the red wizard but fortunately the game got patched and I was able to beat the boss and proceed. Only to get stuck on the next boss, Jocko the Jester. 😦 And it was this boss that after many attempts finally made me give up on the game. So I never even finished it but still feel it’s probably the best XBLIG I ever played. And apparently, there’s been another update that finally convinced Cathy, too. 🙂

But I’m wondering what exactly has been changed this time? You say “the combat is more in line with traditional 2D games” now, but what exactly does that mean? Also, in your original review you spoke of “bland level layouts” whereas in the second chance you mention “well-executed level design” and that the “map really stands out”, so have they actually changed the layout of the levels, too? I’m just wondering if it’s worth picking up the game again after such a long time and after having made peace with my inability to complete it.
