Ah, the curse of the never-ending backlog. I’m sure if my “to do” pile toppled over, it’d be felt in the next state over.

I got Grow Home with PS+, AJ’s grandson played it a bit one day but it was too complex for the little kid. I just never got around to it, but even I struggled to help him with the controls. It’s on my “to do” pile. Which at this point would itself induce vertigo 😛

If I didn’t have to deal with the monsters flying up AND the ones spawning near me on the ledge, it wouldn’t have been *that* bad, but the cursor is so fucking small that I rarely knew where I was firing.

Grow Home is nearly up there with Shadow of the Colossus in terms of sense of vertigo. It’s a short 2-3 hour experience, but I swear I was white knuckling the controller for the last hour or so. I know I brought this up in a Twitter comment to you already, but I think the reboot of Tomb Raider had a few great moments of vertigo (specifically climbing the radio tower in the game’s first half).

If you do end up playing Grow Home, shoot me a tweet @cheapbossattack and let me know what you think. The controls are kind of awkward, but not nearly as bad as Octodad or anything.

I didn’t say which sequel 😉 (I do agree with you)

The reverse space invaders stuff is just so jarring, breaks the flow of combat and leads to endless cheapshots. My theory is that early on it seemed like a good idea that separated it from similar games. By time they figured out it wasn’t fun, it was too late, they were committed to it.

I suspect this might get a sequel, and if it does, while I don’t expect them to eliminate the feature, I do expect them to fix it.

Grow Home I still need to play. The two games that gave me the greatest sense of vertigo were Shadow of the Colossus (and Ico too, though I hated Ico, think it’s one of the most overrated games ever), and Super Mario Sunshine, specifically the level that has construction beams that you have keep going across.

Happy you enjoyed it though. You just made my day 🙂

I totally agree about the frequently annoying “reverse space invaders” ledge shooting moments, and I wish the sense of height and scale were better… maybe something akin to Grow Home, where I felt like I was going to shit myself at the slightest error?

Great write-up. If not for you, this game would have completely flown under my radar.
